A hide leaves the tannery pale. Vegetable tanning takes weeks, not hours, and it leaves the surface open, so oil, sun and the warmth of a hand all get in and stay. We buy full-grain hides from Italy, cut every piece by hand and stitch it with waxed linen. The leather does the rest, slowly, in your pocket.
